From Blue Skies to Darkest Night

FLT. LT. LLOYD W. HENDERSON, DFC
NO. 10 SQUADRON
ROYAL CANADIAN AIRFORCE
39 COMBAT MISSIONS IN A HANDLEY PAGE HALIFAX
(25 NIGHT, 14 DAY)

My Grandfather, Flight Lieutenant Henderson grew up on a small farm in Herschel, Saskatchewan. When war broke out, he was quick to join up. He had this to say about enlisting:

“Enlisting in the army wasn’t what I wanted, I didn’t like the idea at all. I used to look up in the sky and see the airplanes flying around. I thought that it was a lot better than walking.”

In April 1944, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. It was said,

“As captain of aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Henderson has completed a tour of operations during which he has shown high courage and unwavering resolutions to press home in attacks often in adverse circumstances. On one occasion in June, 1944, his aircraft was detailed to attack Trappes. After the target had been bombed, his aircraft was attacked by a Focke-Wulf 190. By skillful airmanship, he enabled his gunners to fire on the fighter which burst into flames and was destroyed. Flight Lieutenant Henderson’s devotion to duty has always been of the highest order.”

Bomber Command Crews suffered extremely high casualties: 55,573 were killed out of a total 136,000 Aircrew. A 44.4% death rate.

About us

The War Dungeon is a private collection and museum on Vancouver Island, BC. Over the past several years, with the help of friends and family, we have renovated the basement of our home into a large museum. The displays here cover from the Boer War, all the way to the Vietnam War of the 1960s.

We try to cover all aspects and countries involved wherever possible, and we are always looking to add new and interesting displays to help honor the men and women who sacrificed so much for us. We offer guided  tours upon request as well as on site displays for special occasions.
